Wang Yi on the Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Kiribati: The Rainbow Displays Even More Splendor after the Rain
2019/09/28

On September 27, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and President and Foreign Minister Taneti Maamau of Kiribati met the press together after signing the Joint Communiqué on the Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Kiribati at the Chinese Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN) in New York.

Wang Yi said, President and Foreign Minister Taneti Maamau and I have just signed the Joint Communiqué on the Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Kiribati. In the Communiqué, the Government of the Republic of Kiribati recognizes that there is but one China in the world, the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal Government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. Both sides have decided to resume diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level, effective from the date of signature of this communiqué. The Chinese side highly appreciates this important and right decision of the Government of the Republic of Kiribati.

Wang Yi expressed, today, the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Kiribati here carries two extraordinary and special significances:

First, not far away from where we are now is the UN headquarters. Forty-eight years ago, it is at the UN headquarters that Resolution 2758 was adopted by the UN General Assembly with an overwhelming majority. The Resolution restored the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China in the UN, and recognized the representatives of the government of the People's Republic of China as the only lawful representatives of China to the UN. It is also from that time on that the One China principle has become the extensive consensus of the international community and the important norm of international relations. Today, forty-eight years later, the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Kiribati once again proves with fact that adhering to the One China principle is the will of the people and the trend of our times, and the historic trend that no one can change or reverse.

Second, the People's Republic of China will celebrate its 70th anniversary of its founding in three days. The official resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Kiribati at this moment will undoubtedly add more splendor to this historic moment. China has one more good friend, Kiribati, in its development in the future while the people of Kiribati will carry out mutually beneficial cooperation and share the development opportunities of a major country with a population of more than 1.4 billion.

Wang Yi expressed, although China and Kiribati are far away and different in social system and country scale, both of us are developing countries facing long-term tasks of developing economy and improving livelihood, and stay committed to multilateralism, fairness and justice in international affairs. Since the resumption of diplomatic relations, the Chinese side is willing to, in line with the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, provide help for Kiribati in realizing its independence and sustainable development within China's capacity. We are also willing to enhance communication and coordination with Kiribati on regional and international affairs to jointly safeguard the legitimate rights of developing countries.

Wang Yi expressed, it is the twists and turns that make us clearer about the right direction, and the rainbow only displays even more splendor after the rain. Standing at a new standing point of bilateral relations in history, we firmly believe that China-Kiribati will surely usher in a new prospect of rapid development on the basis of the One China principle, and will inject fresh impetus into the rejuvenation of Kiribati. Here, let us wish a lasting bilateral friendship and together walk towards a bright future of common development and prosperity.
