Your Royal Highnesses Princess Pilolevu and Lord Tui'ta

Your Honorable Acting Prime Minister Semisi Sika,

Honorable Ministers, Nobles of the Realm, Members of the Legislative Assembly,

Your Excellencies, Members of the Diplomatic Corps,

Representatives from the Chinese Community,

Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends,

Good evening! Welcome to join us in celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China here in the Chinese Embassy.

Seventy years ago, the founding of the People's Republic of China brought an end to the more than one hundred years' humiliating history when China used to be invaded and enslaved. The new China has become an independent sovereign state and the Chinese people become the masters of their country, thus turning over a new chapter for China's development. Over the past 70 years, by working hard and diligently, the Chinese people have made tremendous eye-catching achievements. China has stood up, grown rich and is becoming strong. This is an admirable achievement in the history of human development. Fundamental changes have been made to the landscape of China, where as Chinese people's living standards continuously improving and China's international status and influence have steadily increased.

Now, China has become the second biggest economy in the world, and ranks the first in terms of industry, trade and foreign exchange reserve. For the past decade, China contributed to over 30% of global growth every year on average, which makes it an important engine of the world economic growth. The population under absolute poverty in China was reduced from over 700 million 40 years ago to less than 10 million today, contributing 70% to global poverty reduction. The mileage of Chinese high-speed train reach 30,000 kilometers, which makes two third of the whole world. And the Chinese highway mileage is now 140,000 kilometers. China has the largest number of Research&Development personnel and the second largest number of international science papers and citations in the world. The number of patent applications and grants in China ranks the first in the world. After decades of comprehensive rapid development, we have accomplished the great leap from falling behind to catching up and even leading the times. The Chinese economy is potential and resilient. It is a vast sea rather a small pond. Storm can overturn a small pond but cannot overturn the sea. With many advantages, the Chinese economy is able to maintain long-term healthy and stable development and has a very promising future.

China's development achievement are mainly due to the following reasons. Firstly, under the strong leadership of CPC, the Chinese people consistently upholding independence, self-dependence and hard-working. Secondly while learning from all achievements from human civilization, we always stick to the development path that suits China's national situation. Thirdly we always adhere to reform and opening up, and handle properly the relationship between reform, development and stability. Forthrightly we always adhere to integration into world economy and strive to maintain an open world economy and the global free trade system. Looking into the future, China has set  "two centenary goals" which is to accomplish building a moderately prosperous society in all respects by the time the Communist Party of China celebrates its centenary in 2021; and to turn China into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, and harmonious by the time the People's Republic of China celebrates its centenary in 2049. We have all the confidence and capabilities to make these goals come true.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends,

China cannot develop itself without the world, and the world needs China for its prosperity. Over the past 70 years, China consistently adhere to the path of peaceful development, implement the idea of win-win cooperation, and actively safeguard world peace and promote common development. China respects the right of people of all countries to independently choose their own development path. And we will always uphold justice while pursuing interests and the principles of sincerity, amity, affinity and good faith, strengthen solidarity and cooperation with other developing countries, and remain a reliable friend and sincere partner of other developing countries forever. On the issue of climate change, while earnestly fulfilling its international obligations and emission reduction commitments, China has also contributed its wisdom and solutions to the global response to climate change, which has been widely recognized and praised by the international community. During the 2nd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held this April, President Xi stated that China is willing to discuss, build and share the Belt and Road Initiative with other countries so as to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results. China stands ready to work with the international community to actively build a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, justice and win-win cooperation, to build a community with a shared future for mankind, as well as to build an open, inclusive, clean and beautiful world that enjoys lasting peace, universal security, and common prosperity.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends,

China and Pacific island countries are both developing countries and we share many common interests. China always regard Pacific island countries as good friends, partners and brothers. China's relations with Pacific island countries do not target any third party and will not affect their relations with other countries. There is only one China in the world and the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. Recently, Pacific Island countries including the Solomon Islands and Kiribati decided to recognize the One-China principle, sever "diplomatic ties" with the Taiwan authorities and establish or re-establish diplomatic relationships with China. This again fully shows that the universally recognized One-China principle meets the shared aspiration of the people and is an irresistible trend of the times. The other countries should respect the decision independently made by these two countries based on their sovereign rights. China stands ready to continue developing friendly exchanges and cooperation with Pacific island countries based on mutual respect, in order to promote common development as well as peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends,

Since the beginning of this year, through the joint efforts of both sides, China and Tonga have maintained close exchanges at the top and other levels. Our practical cooperation in various fields have been greatly strengthened, and the friendship between our two peoples continuously deepened. The two sides continue to understand and support each other on issues concerning each other's core interests and major concerns, effectively safeguarded the common interests of the two countries. As a sincere development partner of Tonga, China hopes to see Tonga maintain political stability, economic prosperity and improvement of people's livelihood. The election of a new Prime Minister is underway, and the cabinet may face   reshuffle. China hopes and believes that Tonga will maintain political stability and achieve a smooth transfer of political power. Now China-Tonga relations are standing at an new historical starting point. The Chinese side is willing to work with Tonga side to further explore our cooperation potentials, fully implement the important consensus reached by our leaders, and by taking the upcoming 3rd China-Pacific Island Countries Economic Development & Cooperation Forum as an opportunity to push forward steadily our cooperation in various fields under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, continuously deepen our comprehensive strategic partnership so as to bring more benefits to our two countries and our two peoples.

Finally, I'd like to propose a toast,
