Chinese Embassy in Tonga Holds Picture Exhibition

From 22 to 28 January, 2019, Chinese Embassy held a Picture Exhibition of China's Reform and Opening up in 40 Years in Nukualofa, Tonga. Around 100 guests were present, including Hon. Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva, Hon. Speaker of Parliament Lord Fakafanua, a number of Ministers of the Tongan cabinet and Members of the Parliament, representatives of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the Chinese communities and companies as well as the local media outlets.

H.E. Ambassador Wang Baodong reviewed in his speech the great journey and extraordinary achievements of China's reform and opening up over the 40 years, stressed that facts have fully proved that the path, theory, system and culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics that the Communist Party of China (CPC) has led the Chinese people to embark on are completely correct, which has not only brought about huge benefits for the Chinese people, but also has greatly contributed to world peace and development and to the progress of human civilization, furthermore has provided successful experience and bright prospects for other developing countries on their way to modernization. We're confident that, under the guidance of the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and through deepening reform and further expanding opening up, the grand Two Centenary Goals and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation are destined to achieve.

Ambassador Wang pointed out that the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Tonga and the development of the bilateral relationship are also a beneficiary of China's reform and opening up.  The year of 2018 was the 20th anniversary of normalization of China-Tongan relations which have enjoyed new major progress. It's our firm belief that, by making joint efforts, the China-Tonga Comprehensive Partnership Featuring Mutual Respect and Common Development will have a better future. Ambassador Wang also briefed the audience on a recent gathering held in Beijing to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the issuing of a Message to Compatriots in Taiwan, and he was highly appreciative of the Tongan government firmly adhering to the One China principle in the long run.

Hon. Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva spoke highly in his speech of the historic achievements of China's reform and opening up, expressed deep gratitude to the Chinese government and people for their development assistance to Tonga over the years, and vowed that Tonga will continue to drive for enhanced Tonga-China relations on the basis of firmly upholding the One China Principle and the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.
