New Chinese Ambassador to Tonga Liu Weimin Presents Letter of Credence to King of Tonga

On 19th April, 2024, H.E. Mr. Liu Weimin, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Kingdom of Tonga, presented the Letter of Credence to His Majesty King Tupou VI at the Royal Palace of Tonga.

Ambassador Liu conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes from Chinese President Xi Jinping to His Majesty King Tupou VI. Ambassador Liu said that, China attaches great importance to China-Tonga relations and appreciates Tonga’s firm commitment to the one-China principle. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 26 years ago, under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, China-Tonga relations have maintained steadfast momentum with deepening political mutual trust and fruitful outcomes of practical cooperation, which have brought tangible benefits to the two peoples.

Ambassador Liu emphasized that he was honored to be the new Chinese Ambassador to Tonga, keenly aware of the responsibilities that have been entrusted to him. He will spare no efforts to work with friends from all walks of life in Tonga to promote mutual understanding, deepen practical cooperation and advance China-Tonga comprehensive strategic partnership featuring mutual respect and common development.

His Majesty King Tupou VI asked Ambassador Liu to pass his cordial greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping, and welcomed Ambassador Liu to Tonga.          

His Majesty King Tupou VI happily recalled the exchanges between the Tongan royal family and President Xi Jiping, and said that he cherished the friendship with the Chinese side. His Majesty also expressed his appreciation to China’s valuable assistance to Tonga’s social and economic development, and said that Tonga will work with China to make more achievements on the bilateral relations.

Before presenting his credentials, Ambassador Liu reviewed the Royal Guard of Honor.

Ambassador Liu Weimin arrived in Tonga on 18th April, 2024, and presented the copy of the Letter of Credence to Ms. ‘Ilaisipa ‘Alipate, Deputy Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Chief of Protocol on the same day.
